Free Developer Magazines And Newsletters
Despite the constant river of content that is posted online nowadays, there is still something satisfying about having someone filter and curate content into a magazine, newsletter or periodical format, either physical or electronic.
Here are a few of the free ones that I watch out for.
The Pragmatic Bookshelf publishes a really diverse electronic magazine, covering new languages, tools and methods, as well as the big picture advice normally associated with the Pragmatic Programmers books.
On the topic of agile, there is the Agile Alliance magazine. This is a really interesting look at all of the methods that surround software development: processes and people issues as well as discussion of tools supporting software development processes.
From a Java perspective, I follow the long standing Java newsletter and the companion newsletters that grew up around it. Despite using Java for years, content in these newsletters can really make you think.
The common thread is curation. A good editor saves you from the endless feed and puts something in front of you that you would not have found on your own. That is worth a little inbox space.
If you want a longer reading list, my agile reading list covers the books that shaped my thinking. For the delivery side, CI tools is a good next stop.
